Lecture Series: Evaluating Portrayals of Mental Illness in YA Fiction

7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Wood Buffalo Regional Library

Description

Diversifying young adult (YA) collections is a common topic among librarians, educators, and authors. Ideally,
diversity allows us to celebrate differences while simultaneously recognizing the similarities in our common
humanity. My research considers how mental illness is portrayed in YA fiction. Additionally, how I might
assess books for appropriate representations before I add them to my library’s collection or recommend
them to readers. Join me to discuss what I have learned on my research journey, including a review of several
books and why they may (or may not be!) worth recommending.

Admission is free, and no registration is required.
